(fill in the blank)
Is the word "don't" overused at your house?
How often do you tell your children, “Use your words”? Have you thought about the words you use? Have you wondered about their effect?
Rudyard Kipling, Nobel Prize winner and author of the classic children’s books: The Jungle Book and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi said:
"Language is the most powerful drug known to mankind."
Are You Using Your Parent Language for the Powers of Good?!
We’ve all said... “Don't _______________!" (fill in the blank) “Don’t spill!" "Don’t run!" "Don’t hit your sister!"
Experience What Happens When You...
Take a deep breath… Clear your mind... And then… Read on… And... Don’t think of a blue elephant...
What just happened in your mind’s eye? Did you see a blue elephant? Of course you did!
Our brains are designed to make pictures in order to understand the world. We have to picture the blue elephant before we can draw that red X through it…so that you can NOT think of it.
Imagine What Happens When You Tell Your Child...
"Don’t spill your milk!" "Don’t run!" "Don’t hit your sister!" Your child makes a picture of milk spilling, running, and hitting his sister.
How Do You Get Your Child to Understand You?...
Its actually really simple...
Tell Them What You DO Want!
Before you speak to them...Ask Yourself:
“What Do I Want Instead?" “I want you to keep your milk in the glass.” “I want you to hold my hand on the sidewalk.” “I want you to keep your hands to yourself.”
Practice Makes Perfect...
Be gentle with yourself as you learn this new and powerful language skill.
And while you may not win the Nobel Prize, you will win the understanding and respect of your children and all those you communicate with!
